Acute kidney injury (aki) is sudden damage to the kidneys that causes them to not work properly. It can range from minor loss of kidney function to complete kidney failure. Aki is the entire spectrum of disease (mild -> severe), and can be defined as an abrupt (1 to 7 days) and sustained (more than 24 hours) decrease in kidney function.

With aki, your kidneys stop working as they normally would to filter and clean your blood. Aki may lead to a number of complications, including metabolic acidosis, high potassium levels, uremia, changes in body fluid balance, effects on other organ systems, and death. Acute kidney injury is a rapid decrease in renal function over days to weeks, causing an accumulation of nitrogenous products in the blood (azotemia) with or without reduction in amount of urine output. Given the impact of the prognosis of aki, it is important to enhance the recognition of at-risk patients and to improve preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies.
